Christopher Neil Payne

Dr. Payne’s background is in East Asian Studies, with a particular focus on cultural production from the People's Republic of China (PRC), Taiwan and Hong Kong. He holds a PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London and has taught at the Academy of East Asian Studies, Sungkyunkwan University (Seoul), and The University of Manchester. In July 2020, he was appointed to the University of Toronto as Associate Chair for the English and Chinese Translation Programme. He has published in Modern Chinese Literature and Culture, Positions: Asia Critique, Archiv orientální, International Journal of Taiwan Studies, among others. Together with his frequent co-translator, he has three published translations, two novels by Mai Jia (published by Penguin) and one novel by Jiang Zilong (published by ACA). Two further translations are forthcoming, The Mountain Whisperer by Jia Pingwa and Distant Sunflower Fields by Li Juan.
