- L'Esprit gaulois David
Trotter
- Women playwrights on the London
stage Maggie Gale
A head-on confrontation with the issue of feminist theatres,
concentrating on the work of those who would normally be excluded
from such a category. She concentrates on G.B. Stern's The Man
Who Plays the Piper and Sylvia Rayman's Women of
Twilight.
- The rise and fall of the Reithian
Sunday Christopher McCullough
This article attempts to articulate the nature of the early years
of BBC television under the management of John Reith, with
particular reference to the evolution of Sunday broadcasting. It
argues that this combined Reith's own calvinistic attitudes with
liberal humanistic ideologies that may be traced back to Matthew
Arnold. The 'Reithian Sunday' is seen to serve as a paradigm for
the dissemination of the myth of an essential 'Englishness' in the
relationship between secular and spiritual edification.
- Regionalism in Italy Anna
Bull
An analysis of several diverse factors on the regional question in
Italy. These include disillusion with central government as a
result of political scandal and corruption, the problem of
underdevelopment in southern Italy, and popular support for
institutional change, embracing regional reform. The
unpredictability of the Italian political landscape in the 1990s
makes predictions about the nature of such reform extremely
hazardous.
