Katherine Townsend

Katherine Townsend (Ph.D.) is a professor of fashion and textile practice, whose work is aligned with sustainable transitions in the Fashion and Textile Research Centre, at Nottingham Trent University. Her research (and Ph.D. supervision) encompasses the development of participatory (clothing) design methodologies, towards emotional durability, and social and sustainable innovation. Ongoing projects include ethnographic research into sustaining artisanal textile practices in Guatemala, supported by the Global Challenges Research Fund and ‘Redesigning PPE’ to be comfortable, reusable and recyclable in collaboration with NHS and industry partners (2021–23, AHRC/ VO15842/1). Katherine led the research projects Crafting Anatomies (2015–20) and Emotional Fit (2017), and has published in The Design Journal, Textile, Textile Design Research and Practice and Clothing Cultures.
