Marianne Adams

Marianne Adams holds an MFA in choreography and performance from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, and an MA in clinical psychology from Appalachian State University. As a dance studies professor at Appalachian, she has created over 35 new courses in the curriculum and teaches in dance, somatic sustainability and expressive arts. She served as chairperson of the Theatre and Dance Department from 2007 to 2015. She is certified in classical Pilates, GYROKINESIS® and GYROTONIC® and co-founded the Pilates Teacher Training programme at Appalachian State in 2005. She is a founding member of the Appalachian Expressive Arts Collective and has twice been the Artist in Residence at the European Graduate School for Expressive Arts in Switzerland. Her research on mindfulness, dance and somatic sustainability has been published in Journal of American College Health; Dance, Movement & Spiritualities; Journal of Dance & Somatic Practices; Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies; Journal of Dance Education; Currents Journal and the Journal of Poetry Therapy.
