Alexandra D’Onofrio

Alexandra D’Onofrio is an anthropologist, documentary film director and community arts facilitator. After completing her BA in social anthropology (2004) at SOAS, she travelled between Brazil and Italy to train in theatre of the oppressed and then founded Fandema, a multicultural forum theatre group in Milan. As part of her MA in visual anthropology (2008) at the University of Manchester, she produced a photographic audio-documentary ‘Caught in between darkness and light’, on the experience of flight to the United Kingdom through Calais, of a group of Ethiopian and Eritrean men. In 2017 Alexandra obtained her Ph.D. in anthropology media and performance at the University of Manchester, one of the first practice-based Ph.D.s in anthropology, combining theatre, storytelling, photography, documentary filmmaking and animation as ways of exploring migrant imaginative lifeworlds.
