Call for Submissions: Journal of Popular Music Education

Special Issue Description 

This call seeks article submissions for a special issue of the Journal of Popular Music Education, guest edited by the three co-editors of the Cambridge Companion to the Drum Kit Matt Brennan, Joseph Michael Pignato, and Daniel Akira Stadnicki. 

Article submissions should pertain to the emerging scholarship on drum kits, the drummers who play them, and related topics of relevance to popular music education. In the wake of Smith (2013), “I Drum, Therefore I am,” a burgeoning number of drummers doing scholarship have begun to coalesce across a number of disciplines, including music education (Stadnicki, 2017), ethnomusicology (Pond 2016; Packman 2016), jazz studies (Erskine 2016; Barker 2015), popular music studies (Brennan forthcoming), creativity (Bruford, 2018), and related fields. 

This special issue then seeks to expand a growing “community of response” (Pignato, 2017) comprised of scholars and practitioners interested in the focused study of the drum kit. The special issue corresponds with the imminent release of the Cambridge Companion to the Drum Kit, a first of its kind text, an edited volume dedicated solely to scholarly consideration of the drum kit. 

Relevant Topics 

The following list represents potential topics. Topics not listed here are certainly welcome for submission. All topics should focus on the drum kit and its implications for popular music teaching and learning:

• Histories of the drum kit, of drummers, of related phenomena 

• Emergent drumming techniques and repertoire 

• Teaching and learning drumming in school music contexts 

• Teaching and learning drumming outside of school music contexts 

• Drumming and identity

• Drumming and gender 

• Drumming and race

• Drumming and kinesthetics 

• Drumming and well-being 

• Drumming and experience 

• Drumming and musicianship 

• Drumming and community 

• Drumming and aesthetics 

Submission Guidelines

Please submit manuscripts of between 6,000 and 8,000 words (double-spaced, Times New Roman, font size 12, including references) by 1 July 2020 for the attention of guest editors Matt Brennan, Joseph Michael Pignato, and Daniel Akira Stadnicki via the JPME website. 

Please refer to JPME submission guidelines and Intellect style guide when preparing a submission. Less traditional format submissions are also welcomed for consideration for the perspectives and practices section of the journal.
