David Zeitlyn

David Zeitlyn has been doing research in Cameroon since 1985. Since the early 2000s, he has been working with some Cameroonian photographers. This led to a small exhibition in 2005 of the work of Samuel Finlak and Joseph Chila, which was held at the National Portrait Gallery, London and at the British Council, Yaoundé. The studio of Jacques Toussele was the focus of an archiving project undertaken with the British Library’s Endangered Archives Programme. Toussele’s work was one of two photographers shown at the Cameroon National Museum, Yaoundé in 2019. A major show of all three photographers will be at the Fowler Museum, UCLA in 2021. Zeitlyn has written on divination, life history, archives and history and metaphors for the future, as well as working on endangered languages and sociolinguistics.
