Aims & Scope

Film International is devoted to the study of world cinemas, focusing on films within international and transnational contexts. The journal offers insights into the broader scope of cinema practices across the globe, both feature-length and otherwise, including by way of cultural comparison. It not only encourages attention to underrepresented regions such as the Global South, small-nation and minor cinemas, but also to how aesthetic choices have been made in these contexts.

Film International publishes rigorously peer-reviewed articles as well as book and festival reviews. It focuses on fostering a deeper understanding of filmmaking as an art form rooted in universal human expression, beyond the commercial priorities that dominate in certain regions. The journal aims to broaden the film studies canon, expanding the field while responding to ongoing changes in increasingly globalized societies and cultures.

General Call for Papers

Film International targets thought-provoking contributions to film analysis having proven applicable to international contexts, including by way of comparison. We welcome analytical essays that engage critically with any aspect of film, media or screen culture, particularly those that demonstrate relevance in a transnational framework. A focus on film production, distribution and/or consumption in underrepresented regions and cultures is encouraged. These should be contextualized from a broader awareness of cinematic practices around the globe. Beyond descriptive film surveys and/or biographical essays, a compelling, original argument should be reinforced throughout by an appropriate balance of recent references. Scholarly article submissions may also be interdisciplinary and should fall within 6000–8000 words. Book and festival reviews should be between 800 and 2000 words.
