Francis Yeoh

The subject of Francis Yeoh’s doctoral thesis, Birkbeck Law School, University of London, is Copyright Law Does Not Adequately Accommodate the Art Form of Dance. He obtained LLB (Hons) from the University of Singapore and practiced law after being called to the bar in both Malaysia and Singapore. He obtained his M.A. (Ballet Studies) from Roehampton University in 2004. His initial training in ballet was at the Singapore Ballet Academy and then he trained at the Royal Ballet School (1965–1966). He also studied notation at the Benesh Institute of Choreology (1966–1967). As a performer, his initial experience with the Singapore Ballet Company was enhanced by his experience with the Harlequin Ballet on an Arts Council tour in 1968. After that, he returned to Singapore to further his career in law. However, he did not abandon his dance interests as in 1970 he was appointed as artistic director of the Singapore National Dance and Theatre Company the Singpore Culture Ministry; a role he undertook until 1978 when he returned to the United Kingdom and served as company secretary/administrator of the Benesh Institute until 1987. He is currently a senior lecturer at London Studio Centre a college connected to Middlesex University.
