Jeffrey Magee

Jeffrey Magee is professor of music and theatre at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he has previously served as director of the School of Music and associate dean of the College of Media. He is the author of The Uncrowned King of Swing: Fletcher Henderson and Big Band Jazz (2005) and Irving Berlin’s American Musical Theater (2012), both published by Oxford University Press. His work has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities and recognized with the Society for American Music’s Irving Lowens Award for Best Book, an award for excellence in historical recorded sound research from the Association for Recorded Sound Collections, and the Kurt Weill Prize from the Kurt Weill Foundation. He has published articles and book chapters on ragtime, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Hamilton, Rodgers and Hammerstein and Stephen Sondheim, among other subjects. One of his earlier articles was recently reprinted in Music in Black American Life (University of Illinois Press, 2022). He is writing a book about Gypsy under contract with Oxford University Press.
