Jennifer O’Reilly is a Ph.D. candidate at the Research Centre for Literature and Cultural History at Liverpool John Moores University. She is currently a visiting scholar at Southern Connecticut State University where she teaches courses on race and American Literature in the English department. Her research focuses on representations of African-based belief systems in the American cultural imagination from the end of the nineteenth century to the present. Her project traces how hierarchies of race and religion have intersected and explores how these intersections have been represented in ethnography and literature from across this period. Jennifer’s research is particularly focused on New Orleans and considers how understandings of race, magic and religion interact with conceptions of the city.
