Special Issue Call for Papers

Special Issue: ‘Media, Justice, and Equality’

In 1961 Franz Fanon published Les Damnés de la terre (The Wretched of the Earth). He argued how colonization is the systematic denial of the humanity of ‘the other’. It intentionally erases all human qualities to carry on the colonial project violently overtaking control of the individuals, the land, the culture, the memories, the history and the language.  Since the 1990s scholars from the decolonial turn have argued that even when the colonial powers withdraw from the occupied land, the colonial project persists through the continuation of modern forms of exploitation and domination grounded in the rooted discrimination of ‘the non-human other’ based on race, ethnicity, religion or language (Quijano 1991). Western colonial epistemology and the production of scientific knowledge perpetuate Eurocentric regimes of thought, devaluing all other forms of knowledge production (Mignolo 2007, Lander 2003). In addition, there is an embedded linguistic racialization that strips populations of their humanity, attributing to them a natural communicative and mental inferiority based on their language (Aguilar 2020, Veronelli 2019).

The lived experience of oppression is also controlled by the colonial power through the systemic stereotyping of subjugated people as backward, uncivilized, dangerous or an obstacle to development. Representation regimes respond to the colonial imaginary; hence, dominant media systems impede the oppressed from using their languages and expressing their realities, stories and cultures as they control access to outlets, censor, shadow-ban and misrepresent the oppressed/colonized.

In this special issue of the Journal of Alternative and Community Media, we invite contributions that discuss and analyze:

  • The ways alternative and community media contribute to social justice and knowledge production in and about communities oppressed and erased by the ongoing colonial regimes.
  • The alternative uses of mainstream digital platforms by colonized peoples to convey their lived experiences of oppression and resistance.
  • The role of alternative and community media in providing oppressed/colonized people with platforms to narrate, share and contextualize their experiences, history, traditions and life forms.
  • The potential of alternative and community media as spaces of resistance to decolonize Western media systems.

JOACM adheres to a rigorous double-blind peer review policy.

Manuscripts should be submitted free of identifying features including authors’ names and affiliations. The full name of each author with current affiliation and contact details plus a short biographical note, including ORCID ID, should be supplied in the cover letter.
