Katherine Townsend

Katherine Townsend (Ph.D.) is associate professor in fashion and textile crafts in the School of Art & Design at Nottingham Trent University, where she leads the Digital Craft and Embodied Knowledge research group. Following a career as a design practitioner and lecturer, she gained a practice-led Ph.D., ‘Transforming shape’ (2004) which explored the integration of hand and CAD/CAM technology to design minimal waste, digitally printed fashion. Current collaborative research includes: ‘Emotional Fit: emotionally durable clothing for older people; the integration of new technology into artisanal textile production’, supported by the Global Challenges Research Fund and the Emmanuel House Project, a sustainable fashion, student-led initiative to raise awareness of homelessness and clothing poverty, donated clothing and textile waste.
