Lena Jayyusi
Lena Jayyusi is Associate Professor in the College of Communication and Media Sciences at Zayed University in the United Arab Emirates. She is also a non-resident Senior Research Fellow with Muwatin: the Palestinian Institute for the Study of Democracy located in Ramallah, Palestine. She served as Chair of the Department of Communication Studies at Cedar Crest College in Pennyslvania in the USA for four years, and was thereafter an Annenberg Scholar at the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Pennsylvania between 1994-1995. She worked between 1995 and 2002 in Palestine, doing research on Palestinian media discourse, initially as an SSRC Research Fellow, and a Ford Foundation grantee, and thereafter as Senior Research Fellow with Muwatin, the Palestinian Institute for the Study of Democracy.
She has written and published on categorization practices, visuality, memory narratives, media and nation-building, human rights discourse, the politics of globalization and national identity.
She served as a Senior TOKTEN consultant for the UNPD in Jerusalem, on assignments to Al Quds University and Birzeit University in the West Bank, working on programs in media study and cultural studies respectively, and was the Director of the Oral History Program at Shaml, the Palestinian Diaspora and Refugee Centre.
She is the author of Categorization and the Moral Order (Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1984), which was published in French in 2010 by Economica. Her edited book Jerusalem Interrupted: Modernity and Colonial Transformation, 1917-the Present will be published by Interlink in 2011, and her edited Arab language reader on ‘Media and Democracy’ is to be published by Muwatin in 2011. She is currently working on a book on Palestinian media and national discourse during the Oslo years.
