Luc Nijs

Luc Nijs is a postdoctoral researcher at IPEM (Ghent University, Belgium) and a Ph.D. researcher in the arts at Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp (Belgium). His research focuses on instrumental music education. Based on the integration of theory development, empirical studies and practice, he develops a practice and research-based approach to instrumental music teaching and learning. The core of this approach is the deliberate use of non-instrumental movements to establish an optimal musician–instrument relationship and to foster musical understanding, creativity and expressiveness. Part of his work is devoted to music educational technologies that provoke an embodied approach to learning how to play an instrument. His Ph.D. project received the EAPRIL Best Practice and Research Project Award 2012. He is chair of the AEC Digitization Working Group in the European project ‘Strengthening Music in Society’; associate editor of the International Journal of Music in Early Childhood; and regularly edits special issues for international peer-reviewed journals (Frontiers, IJMEC, JMTE).
