Maria Gaitanidi

Maria Gaitanidi is a Greek-born actress, director and pedagogue based in London. In 2011, she founded the ensemble We Are Raw Material, creating a programme of performances, laboratories and workshops that explore the rawness of the space, the text and the performer as creator. Maria’s work, be it site-specific or taking place in a theatre, explores classical and modern texts, breaking clichés and developing her own artistic research on ‘the verticality of the actor’. Maria’s approach combines different elements of her training and research, including the ‘ludic structures’, an approach to acting and the theatrical art inspired by Plato’s texts and developed by Anatoli Vassiliev, and the ‘active analysis’ developed by Maria Knebel. In 2008, following a classical curriculum at the Brussels Conservatoire, Maria became assistant to Russian director Anatoli Vassiliev (Epidaurus Festival), with whom she also completed her training as an actress, director and pedagogue. More recently, Maria has joined Maud Robart’s core group of research. For more information, visit http://www.wearerawmaterial.net.
