Natalie Sarrazin

Natalie Sarrazin is associate professor of music at The College at Brockport, SUNY. She holds a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from the University of Maryland, College Park, and an MA in music from Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University. Natalie is also the author of several books including a co-edited volume, Music in Contemporary Indian Film: Memory, Voice, Identity, Routledge’s Music and Screen Media Series (2016), and Indian Music for the Classroom (Rowman Littlefield/MENC, 2008). She has written and spoken extensively on the topic of music in Hindi film, and has authored numerous articles such as ‘Devotion or pleasure?: Music and meaning in the celluloid performances of qawwali in South Asia and the diaspora’, Music, Culture and Identity in the Muslim World: Performance, Politics and Piety (Routledge, 2013), ‘Celluloid love songs: Musical modus operandi and the dramatic aesthetics of romantic Hindi film’, Popular Music Journal (2008), and ‘Children’s urban and rural musical worlds in North India’, in The Oxford Handbook of Children’s Musical Cultures (Oxford University Press, 2012).
