Nina Ter Laan
Nina ter Laan is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Religious Studies at the Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands. She is involved in the research program, 'Islam and the Performing Arts in the Middle East and Europe: From cultural heritage to cultural citizenship', based in the same university. Her research focuses on the dynamics of Sufi and Islamist musical practices in Morocco, particularly performances and disseminations of devotional music in the public sphere in relation to cultural politics, nationalism and political marginalization. Her Masters work in cultural anthropology was on the relationship between art and anthropology, more specifically on constructions of Berber identity within contemporary Moroccan painting. She has conducted extensive field work in the Netherlands, Iran and Morocco, and spent long periods of time in Morocco where she studied Moroccan Arabic.
