Ray Campbell

Ray is a professional stand-up comedian, cabaret artist and promoter, who worked mainly in the 1990s. In 1987, he and a group of like-minded friends opened Cabaret A Go Go in Newcastle-upon-Tyne: the first alternative cabaret club in the far North of England, where he was the resident compère. He has appeared on the same bills as Harry Hill (then called ‘Harry Hall’), Ed Byrne, Steve Coogan and Jo Brand. Television appearances include The Late Show (BBC2 1990), Five’s Company (Channel 5 1998, 1999). Ray has recently completed his Ph.D. in cultural studies. His thesis, titled Comic Cultures: aesthetics and performance of Alternative Comedy in the UK, 1979 to 1992 discusses the structural relationships between alternative comedy, post-punk and the avant-garde.
