Sonia Randhawa

Sonia Randhawa has worked as both a journalist and a media freedom advocate, and is active in advocacy and training. She has completed a Ph.D. on the role of the women’s pages in the Malay-language press between 1987 and 1998, looking at how women’s portrayals were affected by the concurrent processes of neo-liberalism and Islamization. She has published work on gender and information and communication technologies; freedom of information; and the impact of media on civil society in Malaysia. Her research interests include media history, gender, media freedom and freedom of information. She is a director of the Centre for Independent Journalism, Malaysia, and has worked in the United Kingdom, Australia and Malaysia.
