Susan Young

Susan Young has recently retired as senior lecturer in early childhood studies and music education at the University of Exeter, UK. She is also senior research fellow at the University of Roehampton, London, Associate of the Centre for Research in Early Childhood, Birmingham and is affiliated with the University of Bristol, UK. In retirement she is now involved in overseas voluntary work at the university of Hargeisa, Somaliland. Her career has combined university lecturing with a range of freelance research, evaluation and consultancy specializing in early years arts, music and education. Originally trained as a pianist at the Royal College of Music London, she went on to study Dalcroze Eurhythmics in Switzerland and the Kodály method in Hungary. She spent her early career teaching music in secondary and primary schools and in a range of early years settings before gaining a PhD in early childhood music from the University of Surrey. She has published widely in professional and academic journals and is frequently invited to present at conferences, both nationally and internationally. She has written several books, including Music with the Under Fours and Music 3-5.
