Vrasidas Karalis

Vrasidas Karalis is Chair of Modern Greek Studies at the University of Sydney. His research is focused on the development of visual cultures from the Middle Ages to the modern world, with particular emphasis on contemporary cinematic practices. He has published essays on the works of Sergei Eisenstein, Alfred Hitchcock, Andrey Tarkovsky and Theo Angelopoulos. Recently he published the first History of Greek Cinema in English (Continuum, 2012). His current research focuses on the rise of the ‘new global realism’ and the various forms of realism that Greek directors from Michael Cacoyannis to Constantine Giannaris have employed in order to address issues of identity, social conflict and transcultural reality.
