Ellen Larson

Ellen Larson is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of the History of Art and Architecture at the University of Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA). Before joining Pitt, she earned a Chinese MA degree from Beijing’s Minzu University of China, focusing her studies on Modern Chinese History. Her second MA thesis, completed in 2018, focused on Cao Fei’s presentation of space and environment, contemplating the legacy of utopianism and ongoing constructions of national and post-socialist identities. Her current dissertation project investigates domestic temporalities within the history of contemporary moving image art from China. Ellen has worked as a research assistant for Cao Fei, with research contributions included in the artist’s solo exhibitions staged in London and Paris. She was also an associate editor for Cao Fei: HX, published in 2020 by the Serpentine Galleries. Ellen was awarded the 2020–21 Fulbright Fellowship to China. She was also chosen to participate in a Getty Foundation Dissertation Workshop, and she was the recipient of a 2019 Henry Luce Foundation Predissertation Grant. Ellen curates and presents exhibitions, educational symposia, and other art events in China and the United States.
