Farida Jalalzai

Farida Jalalzai is associate dean for global initiatives and engagement in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences and is professor of political science at Virginia Tech. Her research analyses the role of gender in the political arena including women national leaders. Her books include: Shattered, Cracked and Firmly Intact: Women and the Executive Glass Ceiling Worldwide (Oxford University Press, 2013), which offers a comprehensive analysis of women, gender and national leadership positions, Women Presidents of Latin America: Beyond Family Ties? (Routledge, 2016), a comparative analysis of women presidents in Latin America and Senhora Presidenta: Women’s Empowerment and Disempowerment in Brazil: The Rise and Fall of President Dilma Rousseff, which examines the first female president of Brazil (with Pedro dos Santos, Temple University Press, 2021). She has published dozens of peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. Her research has been funded by the Thyssen Foundation and she is a recipient of the Fulbright Commission Global Scholar Award.
