Jasmine A. Henry

Jasmine A. Henry (she/her) is an assistant professor of musicology specializing in African American music at the University of Pennsylvania. She recently completed her Ph.D. in musicology at Rutgers University with the defence of her dissertation, ‘Jersey club: Race, place and Black independent music production in Newark, New Jersey’. Her current research focuses on the intersection of Blackness, placemaking, DIY sonic practices and music technologies within contemporary East Coast electronic dance music scenes. You may find her published scholarship in the Popular Culture Studies Journal and Journal of the Society for American Music. As a live sound engineer, she has entertained international audiences through her work on critically acclaimed productions such as the Blue Man Group and HBO’s The Newsroom (2012–14). From 2017 to 2022, Henry served as the media lab director at the Newark School of the Arts where she provided marginalized youth with access to music technologies.
