Marta Fanasca

Marta Fanasca obtained her Ph.D. in Japanese Studies from the University of Manchester with a thesis investigating the phenomenon of female-to-male crossdresser (J. dansō) escorts in contemporary Japan. Her main research line is focused on gender performativity and commodification of intimacy in contemporary Japan, themes that Fanasca looks at with a qualitative approach. Fanasca’s research interests also include queer theory, pop culture and contemporary Japanese visual arts. She is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at the Centre for Youth Studies, School of Social Sciences and Area Studies, Higher School of Economics, St. Petersburg.
