Maysaloun Faraj

Maysaloun Faraj is a painter, sculptor and ceramist. Born (1955) in California, USA, to Iraqi parents, she moved to Baghdad (1968), graduated with a B.Sc. in architecture (Baghdad University, 1978) and resided in London (1982). She relocated to Paris for two years and then returned to London to further her art education there. Faraj revisited Paris as a resident at the Cité Internationale des Arts (2015–18). Her visual vocabulary is colour and basic geometric form; an ideal realm for order and harmony. Amid an aesthetic informed by architectural discipline is a web of references, bridging East and West, ancient and contemporary, public and personal, often pondering on ‘spirituality’ and the transience of human existence. ‘The story I want to share is my challenge as an artist, a woman, a Muslim and an American-born Iraqi, living outside the motherland’. Her works are in notable public and private collections worldwide. Maysaloun Faraj lives and works in London.
