Nora Elizabeth Barakat

Nora Elizabeth Barakat is an assistant professor of history at Stanford University. She is a historian of the late Ottoman Empire and the modern Middle East. Her first book, Bedouin Bureaucrats: Mobility and Property in the Ottoman Empire, was released by Stanford University Press in 2023. She is currently working on a project on legal codification and capitalism in the landscapes linking the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean worlds. Prior to Stanford, Nora taught at New York University Abu Dhabi, and co-founded the OpenGulf research group, a scholarly community devoted to expanding the use of digital methods in Gulf Studies.
