Susana Santos

Susana Santos is a research fellow at CIES and an invited assistant professor at the Department of Sociology, Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (ISCTE-IUL). She holds a Ph.D. in sociology from ISCTE-IUL (2012). In the present, she is working on a project about young corporate lawyers in large, national and international legal firms, focused on studying the impacts of economic globalization on the legal profession. The research line is articulated around the transformations in the legal profession and on the new roles offered in the transnational context, criss-crossing the judicial, economic and political spheres. The complexity of studying the professional integration of young lawyers in large legal firms in a global context comprises different institutions like law schools, professional associations and legal practice in both national and international contexts, allowing one to go further on the observation of social practices and dynamics. Her research interests include the study of transnational elites and young high-skilled professional trajectories, legal professions and legal education – on a broader perspective, sociology of law and the intersection with sociology of professions, organizations and work. Recent publications include ‘Academias de talento feminino: Meios de emancipação ou ferramentas de reprodução social?’ (2020); ‘Becoming a lawyer in a large law firm: The idea of the unstoppable worker’ (2018); ‘Studying large organizations and elites: Limits and challenges of fieldwork’ (2017, with M. Barroso).
