Syrai-Tiare Taumihau

Syrai-Tiare Taumihau (Tahiti, Cook Island, Tonga, Pākehā) is a choreographer, dancer and researcher interested in exploring ways in which the embodiment of vā and talanoa can be used to recentre or decolonize for Moana peoples. She investigates how these exchanges of movement and sharing of lived experiences through dance affects reciprocal relationships between people, space and place. At the time of writing this article, she is currently completing her doctoral degree, in creative practice as a part of the dance studies department at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland (of which she was awarded a doctoral scholarship). Syrai also works as a graduate teaching assistant and has presented this research at the following conferences: Dancing with Decolonisation Online Global Dance Conference (2022), To Hell with Drowning Conference (2023) in Canberra, Australia and the Children, Youth and Performance Conference (2023) in Toronto, Canada.
