The Journal of Interdisciplinary Voice Studies provides a peer-reviewed forum for scholarly and practice-based engagement with voice as a phenomenon of communication and performance, and a methodology or metaphor for analysis. Through an interdisciplinary negotiation of philosophy, practice and pedagogy, the journal draws from such disciplines as cultural studies, performance studies, inter-culturalism, linguistics, visual culture, musicology and somatics.

Aims and Scope

Journal of Interdisciplinary Voice Studies (JIVS) provides a forum for scholarly and practice-based engagement with voice as a phenomenon of communication and performance, and a methodology or metaphor for analysis. The journal draws on an interdisciplinary series of lenses, including cultural studies, critical theory, performance studies, inter-culturalism, linguistics, visual culture, musicology, architecture and somatics. One issue in each volume will follow an explicitly thematic focus.

Regular guest-edited editions will enable the community of voice scholars to be represented through a international and multi-disciplinary forum.

This double-blind peer-reviewed journal is produced in association with the Centre for Interdisciplinary Voice Studies, a collaboration between Voice Studies scholars at the University of Exeter and the University of Portsmouth.

Peer Review Policy

All articles undergo initial editorial screening either by the journal's Editorial Team and/or incumbent Guest Editors. Articles then undergo a rigorous anonymous peer review by two referees, following the guidance in Intellect's 'Peer review instructions'. Based on this feedback, the Editors will communicate a decision and revision suggestions to authors. To appeal an editorial decision, please contact the main Editor who will consider your case.

RECOGNITION
Jennifer Lynn Stoever's article '"Doing fifty-five in a fifty-four": Hip hop, cop voice and the cadence of white supremacy in the United States' (JIVS 3.2) received an Outstanding Article Honorable Mention at the 2019 ATHE (Association for Theatre in Higher Education) Awards.
 
Konstantinos Thomaidis was shortlisted for the 2019 TaPRA (Theatre & Performance Research Association) Early Career Researcher Prize for work including his publications in and co-editing of the journal.

General Call for Papers

All articles submitted should be original work and must not be under consideration by other publications.

We invite submissions that contribute to an interdisciplinary conversation on the idea of voice, welcoming contributions from all fields of voice work including teaching, performance, qualitative/quantitative research, practices and theories of voice.

One issue in each volume will follow an explicitly thematic focus. Regular guest-edited editions will enable the community of voice scholars to be represented through a international and multi-disciplinary forum.

We draw on an interdisciplinary series of lenses, including cultural studies, critical theory, performance studies, inter-culturalism, linguistics, visual culture, film and media studies, musicology, opera studies, ethnomusicology, architecture, sociology, education and somatics, and in so doing, contributions might engage with – but are not restricted to – one or more of the following areas:
