Alex South

Alex South is a musician–researcher based in Scotland. Alex’s interdisciplinary Ph.D. ‘Cetacean citations: Rhythmical variability in the composition and recomposition of humpback whale song’ (2024), was completed at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the University of St Andrews. He is interested in the relationships between human musicking and the acoustic communication systems of other animals, investigating them from an ecomusicological perspective that recognizes human kinship with other animals without downplaying difference. Alex is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities, University of Edinburgh, pursuing research into the ethical and aesthetic implications for musicians of taking animal agency and culture seriously.
