Celebrate our 40th Anniversary with Intellect

2024 marks a significant milestone for Intellect Books & Journals as we celebrate our 40th anniversary. We couldn’t have reached this milestone without our authors, contributors and partners, so gather your party supplies; we will be celebrating all year! We are hosting events and engaging with our community in various ways.

You will find us represented at more than 60 conferences. You can expect a series of 40th-anniversary publications, including a special issue of IQ Magazine. We will be launching a unique ebook collection showcasing our greatest hits and contributions from across our subjects and history. Intellect will produce a series of podcasts and interviews with our authors, staff and the broader academic community. These will touch on key debates and topics, showcase our authors and our content, celebrate our history, as well as discuss the ambitious plans we have for the future. We will publish more new content than ever before while sharing deep cuts from our celebrated backlist through special projects and promotions. We will also share free journal articles and book chapters on a weekly basis. We look quite different today in 2024 than we did in 1984, but our mission and ethos remain unchanged. Intellect publishes and encourages original thinking and seeks to widen critical debate in new and emerging subject areas, all in the pursuit of education and learning. We are fiercely independent and committed to creativity, innovation and excellence, as well as to working with our authors and editors to provide an outstanding service that takes their work to a global audience.

Founded in 1984 by the late Masoud Yazdani, Intellect published its first journal, Artificial Intelligence Review, in 1986. Since then, we have seen continuous organic growth while promoting sustainable business practices. Although we lost Masoud in 2014, his spirit lives on in all that we do. We have grown the business and extended Masoud’s legacy, informed by his vision, furthering his advocacy and agenda, championing emerging scholarship, supporting early career academics, as well as established topics and celebrated scholars. We embrace new ways of thinking, engage in difficult conversations and always advocate equity, diversity, inclusivity, accessibility and sustainability through our business, publications and actions.

To say we have grown would be an understatement. From our humble origins dispatching our very first publications from our founder’s home in Oxford, UK, we now employ more than 30 people and publish around 70 books and 112 journals per year. Intellect is a major global publisher of international scholarly books and journals, across the arts & humanities and the social sciences. 2024 will see the arrival of our first academic handbooks along with the publication of many exciting monographs and edited collections, joining a catalogue of more than 1000 books.

Our journal program continues to develop as we introduce both new topics, content and publishing models. We saw the inaugural issue of our latest, the Journal of Gulf Studies, published in January. We have acquired Dramatherapy from Sage Publications, which Intellect will now publish Diamond Open Access with no article processing charges. We continue to develop Open Access publishing opportunities, and our ever-growing portfolio of Diamond Open Access publications also includes Global Hip Hop Studies, Artifact: Journal of Design Practice and the International Journal of Food Design. Intellect also publishes an increasing number of Gold Open Access book titles each year.

We always strive to keep up with technological advancements and the needs of our community and customers. Whether you are reading this as a representative of an academic institution or as a member of the public, the Intellect Discover platform is now home to all of Intellect’s content, featuring our complete books backlist and our journal archive, including both Open Access and paid content. You can curate collections, purchase books and journals, or simply access our Open Access content and archival materials all in one place. We have many ambitious plans for introducing new content types and further increasing access and impact through Intellect Discover in the years to come.

In 2024, we count among our partners the world’s premier academic institutions, libraries and associations. Intellect’s business partners include the University of Chicago Press, Ingram, Quantum and John Wiley & Sons. We continue to grow and operate on a global scale, remaining passionate about our mission and values while offering the best possible products and services to our customers and community.

We are committed to widening participation and increasing access and impact. As a signatory of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, for example, we focus on objectives like good health and well-being, quality education, responsible consumption and production and reducing inequity. Our commitment also extends to highlighting the valuable research conducted by our authors and editors on topics like sustainability and climate change.

We hope to see or hear from you this year. We’d like to offer our heartfelt thanks to everyone who’s supported Intellect on our 40 year journey. Help us celebrate our history and join us on the next leg of this exciting odyssey.

James Campbell, Head of Marketing & Sales, 1 March 2024
