Alma Rachel Heckman
Alma Rachel Heckman is Assistant Professor of History and Jewish Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She specializes in modern Jewish history of North Africa and the Middle East with an interest in transnationalism and empire. Her most recent article, ‘Multivariable Casablanca: Vichy Law, Jewish Diversity, and the Moroccan Communist Party’ was published in the Fall 2016 issue of Hespéris-Tamuda. She is currently working on a book manuscript tentatively entitled, ‘Radical Nationalists: Moroccan Jewish Communists, 1925–1975’. This project explores shifting Jewish political affiliations and self-imaginings in pre- and post- independence Morocco through the vehicle of the Moroccan Communist Party.
