Ana Raquel Matias

Ana Raquel Matias, Ph.D. in sociology (Instituto Universitário de Lisboa [ISCTE-IUL] and INED Paris), is an invited assistant professor and research fellow at Centro de Investigação e Estudos de Sociologia (CIES-IUL), co-coordinating entity of the project ‘Trovoada de Ideias’. Since 2003 she has been working on the intersection between sociology of international migration and language, comparing immigration and language policies, and social and linguistic integration, in Europe and Portugal. She is a representative of CIES–IUL at IMISCOE (International Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion), a member of the Scientific Committee of the Center for Evaluation and Certification of Portuguese as a Foreign Language, FLUL (CAPLE), and a member of the organizing committee of the 7th Biannual Conference of the Afro-European Network ‘Black In/Visibilities Contested’ (Instituto Universitário de Lisboa [ISCTE-IUL], 2019) and cycle of seminars: ‘Language policies and practices in Portugal: Which choices, impositions and resistances?’ (Instituto Universitário de Lisboa [ISCTE-IUL], since 2018). She is the author of the papers ‘O lugar das línguas imigrantes não europeia na sociologia das migrações internacionais’ (‘The place of non-European immigrant languages in the sociology of international migration’) (2017); ‘Pode a educação plurilingue constituir-se como educação anti-racista?’ (‘Can plurilingual education constitute an anti-racist education?’) (with Martins 2019); and ‘O impacto da crise da COVID-19 nas desigualdades sociolinguísticas e étnico-raciais’ (‘The impact of the COVID-19 crisis on sociolinguistic and ethnic-racial inequalities’) (2020).
