Andrea Modarres

Andrea Modarres is an assistant professor of American ethnic literature in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Washington Tacoma. Her scholarship centers upon multiethnic and anglophone literature of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, exploring various facets of identity formation and the sociocultural, historical and political implications of space and place. Her current research and teaching focus on narratives of identity and belonging in US ethnic literature, with a particular interest in writing by and about Americans of Middle Eastern descent, incorporating diverse genres and audiences ranging from comics and graphic narratives to young adult literature, science fiction and fantasy. She has published articles on Arab American historical fiction, the depiction of Islam in the Ms. Marvel comics and the figure of the obsessed captain in the Star Trek franchise.
