Angel David Nieves
Dr. Angel David Nieves is currently Assistant Professor in the Graduate Programme in Historic Preservation at the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is an affiliate faculty member in the Departments of American Studies, Women’s Studies, African American Studies and Anthropology. He is also an affiliate member of the Centre for Heritage Resource Studies and co-directs the Material Culture/Visual Culture Research Programme Area at the Consortium on Race, Gender, and Ethnicity (CRGE). He completed his doctoral work in architectural history and Africana studies at Cornell University in 2001. He is author of We Gave our Hearts and Lives to it: African-American Women Reformers, Industrial Education, and the Monuments of Nation-building in the Post-reconstruction South, 1877 -1938 (Cornell University 2001).
He is currently beginning to document community-based heritage conservation efforts in the cities of Cape Town and Johannesburg as part of a larger study of the intersections between nationalism and heritage conservation in their former all-Black townships.
