Baran Germen

Baran Germen is a Ph.D. candidate in comparative literature at the University of Oregon. As the recipient of the Jane Grant Dissertation fellowship, he is currently completing his dissertation ‘Melodramatics of Turkish modernity’, which examines the remediation of Halide Edib’s Vurun Kahpeye (Strike the Slut) in both print and film between 1923 and 1973. He tracks the intermedial history by which this melodramatic story of female victimization becomes mythified within the national consciousness through the purging of Edib’s queer feminism. Focusing on anglophone and Turkish contexts, his work cuts across queer theory, film studies, Islam and secularism and postcolonial studies, especially as pertains to the Middle East.
