Brian Joyce
Brian Joyce has particular interests in applied theatre, site and Indigenous performance. For over 40 years he has worked as artistic director, writer, actor, teacher and community cultural development worker across a range of companies, practices and communities, including as artistic director of Freewheels Theatre in Education company for over thirteen years and as director of the Hunter Writers Centre for ten years. Brian is currently the writer/co-producer for Ngarrama Productions, an Aboriginal performance group based in Newcastle that tours nationally. He has written numerous plays that have been professional productions in Australia and internationally, and has also written a number of videos with Ngarrama specifically for Aboriginal audiences, most recently Kutjapa Kutjapa Wiyakitjanku (in Pitjantjatjara). Current projects concern mental health issues in Aboriginal communities and a series of verbatim performances called Wiyalikan: The One who Speaks. Brian is a lecturer in creative and performing arts in the School of Creative Industries where, alongside Dr Gillian Arrighi, he initiated interdisciplinary research into simulation role-play with the disciplines of pharmacy, medicine and occupational therapy, exploring actor training, role-play design and implementation. This practice-led research is ongoing.
