Claire Vionnet

Claire Vionnet has a background in social sciences from the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. She wrote a Ph.D. on the creation of gesture in contemporary dance, combining anthropology and dance studies. In her postdoctoral research, she delved into the phenomenon of intimacy within contact improvisation and contemporary dance, conducting a transcultural analysis across Montreal, Paris and Dakar. Her current research project is dedicated to unpacking the imaginaries embedded in the White gaze and projected on bodies considered as ‘Others’. Beyond her scholarly pursuits, Claire actively engages with dance communities as a practitioner, creatively intertwining anthropological reflections with social issues. Through the integration of dance practice and theoretical thinking, she endeavours to extend the reach of anthropology beyond the confines of academia.
