David A. Gray

David A. Gray is a teaching associate professor in the American studies programme and the Department of History at Oklahoma State University. His research to date focuses on work and society in the United States. He is the author of Work Better, Live Better: Motivation, Labor, and Management Ideology (University of Massachusetts Press, 2020). In this book and other projects, he explores motivational propaganda campaigns in the American workplace within broader political and economic contexts, especially management crusades against unions and the New Deal. He has held research fellowships at the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of American History and the Hagley Museum in Delaware, and a postdoctoral fellowship at University College Dublin’s Clinton Institute for American Studies. He also served as state scholar for the Oklahoma Humanities Council’s Smithsonian Museum on Main Street exhibition, The Way We Worked, which toured small towns throughout Oklahoma in 2017.
