David Sweet

David Sweet was born in 1945 and studied at Hull College of Art and later at the Royal College of Art, from where he graduated in 1969. He taught part time at Hull before getting a post in the Fine Art Department at Liverpool Polytechnic. During that time, he published art criticism in various journals notably Artscribe. He also exhibited regularly, including showing at the Serpentine Gallery in London (1975). He was appointed as head of the Painting School at Manchester Metropolitan University in 1979. In 1992, he was critic-in-residence at the Triangle Artist Workshop in New York. He continued to curate exhibitions and to organize and contribute to conferences on the subject of painting. He completed a doctorate at the University of Essex on Michael Fried’s art criticism in 2004. He lives in Beverley, East Yorkshire, and has a studio in Hull.
