Denise Bentrovato
Denise Bentrovato (Ph.D. History, MA Conflict Resolution) is a senior researcher and extraordinary lecturer in history education in the Department of Humanities Education at the University of Pretoria. She is also co-director of the African Association for History Education (AHE-Afrika) and president of the Swiss-based International Research Association for History and Social Sciences Education (IRAHSSE). Her research experience, spanning nearly two decades, combines interests in history education, memory politics, and identity and citizenship formation, and focuses on (post)colonial and (post-)conflict societies in Africa. Her research, largely based on fieldwork, covers such varied cases as Rwanda, Burundi, DR Congo, South Sudan, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Liberia and Sierra Leone. An important part of her work relates to examining educational responses to historical wrongs within the framework of nation-building and transitional justice processes. Throughout her career, she has worked both in academia and for international organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Africa and Europe, including UNESCO.
