Diane Butler

Diane Butler is dance-movement artist, teacher, cultural programme director and independent associate professor from the USA based in Bali, Indonesia since 2001, and has collaborated with artists from diverse cultures and faiths in the Americas, Europe and Asia for four decades. She and Suprapto Suryodarmo co-founded Dharma Nature Time, a cooperative international foundation to support interculture in cultural environments through sharing in the arts, religiosity and nature. She first engaged in site-specific dance events from 1984 to 1989 while assisting and performing with Japanese-Chinese American choreographer Ruby Shang in the United States, France, Japan and the United Kingdom. In the 1990s, Diane served as the founding director of the InterArts Studies BA programme in the field of contemplative education at Naropa Institute (now University) and a co-founder of The Mariposa Collective in Colorado. Diane is an alumna of the 2011 UNITAR World Heritage Training convened in Japan, holds a BFA in Dance from the Juilliard School; MALS in Dance & Culture from Wesleyan University; and is the first non-Indonesian scholar to earn a Ph.D. in Kajian Budaya (cultural studies) from Universitas Udayana, Bali where, subsequently, the rector appointed her as a volunteer associate professor (2014–23). Since 1997, Diane has offered Awakening InterArts workshops in a number of countries. She serves on the academic review board for several arts and humanities journals accredited in Indonesia. Her interests include: intercultural and interreligious creativity, intangible/living heritage, conservation of cultural and natural heritage sites, participatory practice-based methods. https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1396-5234
