Dr Jacob Thompson-Bell

Jacob Thompson-Bell is a British composer, currently a principal lecturer at Leeds College of Music (United Kingdom, since 2014). He completed his music composition practice-based Ph.D. at the Royal Northern College of Music (Manchester, United Kingdom, 2010–13), subsequently taking up a position as Sound and Music’s Embedded Artist in Residence with Somerset House (London, 2013–15). Jacob’s music spans contemporary classical, experimental and visual arts practices, often combining visual imagery with musical performance. He has received funding and support for his work from Arts Council England, Creative Scotland, Sound and Music, Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, RVW Trust and Leeds College of Music. Jacob has worked with London Sinfonietta, Nonclassical, London Symphony Orchestra, the Debussy Trio, Orchestra of Opera North, Ligeti Quartet, Lontano and CoMA; and soloists including Matthew Bourne, Philip Thomas, Joely Koos and Joel Bell. His music has been performed in venues including the Purcell Room (London), LSO St Luke’s (London), Howard Assembly Rooms (Leeds), RNCM Concert Hall (Manchester), British Museum (London) and BFI Southbank (London). As a producer, Jacob has led independent projects ranging from artist networks, exhibitions and performances at galleries around Yorkshire (Fresh Yorkshire Aires, since 2015), installation performances at Somerset House (Embedded Artist in Residence, 2013–15) and LSO St Luke’s (2013), to collaborative exhibitions at Blankspace Gallery (Manchester, 2012).
