Dyese L. Matthews

Dyese L. Matthews is a fashion studies scholar who is committed to conducting research and building curriculum that critiques injustices embedded throughout the fashion system and aims to uplift marginalized voices. Her current work centres fashion-related lived experiences of Black women and their negotiations of style–fashion–dress. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in apparel design at Cornell University where her dissertation explores the ongoing crossings of space and place, memory, power structures, consumerism and the fashion system with a focus on Black women’s subject formation in Harlem, New York City from 1970 to present. Dyese has published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and has presented her research at several national and international conferences. As a 2023 recipient of the Cornell University Graduate Diversity and Inclusion Social Justice Award, Dyese centres community engagement and programming in her work as she values public accessibility to research findings and related curriculum.
