Elaine D. Bernstorf

Elaine D. Bernstorf is a professor of music education at Wichita State University. Her degrees are BME and MME in special music education, Ph.D. in communicative disorders and sciences. She taught elementary general music and special music education in the Wichita Public Schools (1976–90), at WSU as adjunct instructor (1984–92), tenured faculty for School of Music (1993–present) and Honors Faculty Fellow (2013–present). She was associate dean for the College of Fine Arts (2001–09), interim dean (2003–04). As a professor and researcher, she focuses on elementary vocal music, special music education, early childhood arts education, speech pathology (especially voice, fluency and child language), literacy development and curriculum development. She co-authored NAfME’s book The Music and Literacy Connection ([2004] 2014) published by Roman & Littlefield. A Kodály certified teacher, she has directed applied learning music programmes in early childhood and special music education for ENVISION, Cerebral Palsy Research Foundation and WSU’s university speech-language-hearing pre-school.
