Elena M. De Costa
Elena M. De Costa holds a Ph.D. in Spanish and Comparative literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a dissertation on contemporary Spanish poetry. She has had an extensive career in higher education, teaching Latin American literature, history and politics at Santa Clara University and Carroll University. Her publications have appeared in scholarly journals and include a book on collaborative Latin American popular theatre for social change. A forthcoming book will explore select twentieth-century Latin American poets and their use of spatial, temporal and dramatic structures. She has written and directed numerous original works and adaptations of theatre pieces, which incorporate poetry, music and dance to convey social messages, and was the editor of the Spanish language student magazine, El Coloso, employing investigative journalism. She is the recipient of awards in state-wide civic engagement, service to the university and community and exceptional creative and scholarly activity. Her current research interests are centred on Latin American sung-poetry and popular theatre.
