Emilie Rutledge

Emilie Rutledge (Ph.D.) is an applied economist focusing on the economic and social challenges facing the Gulf Cooperation Countries (GCC) as they transition towards becoming more diversified economies. She is co-author of seminal articles on the GCC’s labour markets such as ‘Unemployment in the Gulf: Time to update the “Social Contract”’ (Forstenlechner and Rutledge 2010), Middle East Policy journal’s top cited article and is sole author of ‘Monetary union in the Gulf: Prospects for a single currency in the Arabian Peninsula’ (Routledge, 2008 and 2012). She has been principal investigator on several nationally and internationally funded research projects for institutions such as the World Bank and the UAE’s Federal Demographic Council. She is author of numerous academic articles, book chapters and newspaper articles and has provided consultancy services to Oxford Analytica, the Dubai Council for Economic Affairs and Abu Dhabi’s General Secretariat for the Executive Council. She is an awarded teacher and has successfully supervised doctoral students in the Gulf states. Emilie is currently senior lecturer in economics at the School of Social Sciences and Global Studies at The Open University, UK, she was previously associate professor of economics at the United Arab Emirates University and has lived and worked in Bahrain, Egypt, Syria and the Palestinian Territories.
