Emry Sottile
Emry Sottile is an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in theatre and drama student at Northwestern University where they are an active role-player, theatre scholar and musical theatre dramaturg. They have an MA in war in society, a BFA in television writing and production, and a BA in history from Chapman University, where they researched war-situated American musicals and their contributions to larger American memory and mythology. They are most interested in contemporary musicals and their intersections with technology, community and neoliberalism, especially in the digital age. When not studying musicals, their main research is situated within theatre, queer and role-playing game studies and focuses on fantasy role-playing game performance practices following the subculture’s normalization in the past decade. Their work can also be seen in The International Journal of Role-Playing and in a forthcoming 2024 article on intratextual social media usage in contemporary teenage musicals for The Journal of Popular Culture.
